Welcome To Keansburg, New Jersey

Keansburg was once home to the Lenni Lenape native Americans. Henry Hudson landed in the area in 1609, and between 1609 and the early 1700’s the land was purchased from the Lenni Lenapes, and Dutch, English and Scottish settlers were the first Europeans to live here. Farming was successful in the area, and crops included pears, apples and corn.

The first settlement used the Lenni Lenape name of Waackaack (pronounced “Way-kay-ack”), originally “Wakioak” which means “Land of plenty.” From the early 1700’s until 1820 it was called Tanner’s Landing - named after a pier at the end of Tanner’s Landing Road. The second official name was Granville because of a grain mill in the area. This name was used until the 1880’s. John Kean of Elizabeth, a candidate for Congress, led the effort to open a post office in 1884, and that year the name Keansburg was adopted. Today, the estimated Keansburg year round population (2003) is 10,746 people.

Keansburg is located in east central New Jersey on Raritan Bay - 9 miles south of Perth Amboy on Point Comfort, which extends out into the bay, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It was incorporated in 1917 from portions of Middletown Township and Raritan Township. It’s a popular summer resort with the Keansburg Amusement Park rides, the Runaway Rapids Water Park, and a fishing pier. The privately owned and operated half- mile-long fishing pier behind the amusement park is accessible for a small admission fee to walk the pier, and there are fees for fishing, as well. Visitors who need fishing gear may rent it at the pier. Keansburg also features a busy port for commercial and pleasure boats.

Years ago Keansburg competed with Coney Island as one of the best amusement centers in the east. It’s still a great place for family fun with rides and other amusements. The amusement piers begin operated weekends in April, and they’re in full operation through the summer months, returning to weekend openings in September each year.

Visitors can take scenic walks along Raritan Bay, but they’re advised to watch their children carefully because the bay beach does not have lifeguards. Keansburg is a bay town that offers great fun, and access to many attractions within easy driving distance.
